What a Sarasota permit looks like
Which office handles your permit depends on your address. The City of Sarasota has its own online portal and permit office. Its permit types include residential renovation. The City lists permitting at (941) 263-6494 and inspections at (941) 263-6418. We cover the City's portal and contacts in our City of Sarasota permits guide. If your home is in the unincorporated county or in another city, a different office applies. We did not confirm the county's portal or fees here, so we do not list them. North Port has its own system. See our North Port permits guide.

The code that applies to your plans
The City of Sarasota says the 8th Edition (2023) Florida Building Code applies now. It says applications from December 31, 2026 will be subject to the 9th Edition (2026) code. If your project is planned near that date, ask the permit office which edition your application falls under. See our 2026 code guide for what we could and could not confirm.
Flood areas and large repairs
If your home is in a flood area, repair and improvement costs may be compared against the value of the building before you can proceed. The Sarasota County Property Appraiser publishes a page on how it estimates that value. It says a tax-roll value is meant for taxes, and it recommends a private appraisal for FEMA purposes. If you are rebuilding after storm damage, our home restoration work includes documenting the damage and coordinating the construction scope with your insurance adjuster. We do not negotiate the claim. That is between you and your insurer.
