The short answer

Sort your complaints into two piles: things about the house, and things about everything around it. A kitchen that is too small, a bathroom you cannot use safely, or a missing bedroom is about the house. Remodeling can fix it. A long drive to work, the school zone, a noisy road or a lot that is too small is about the place. Remodeling cannot fix it.

If most of your list is about the house and you like where you live, remodeling is usually worth pricing first. If most of your list is about the place, no remodel will fix it. We cannot tell you which is right without knowing your house, and we do not give investment advice. What we can do is show you how to compare the numbers.

What a remodel returns at resale

One regional benchmark is the Cost vs Value report from Zonda (South Atlantic region, 2025). It lists typical job costs and the share the report says is recouped at resale. These are regional averages, not Tampa Bay prices and not Hildebrand quotes:

Cost vs Value, South Atlantic region, 2025
ProjectJob costRecouped at resale
Minor kitchen remodel, midrange$28,567109.2%
Major kitchen remodel, midrange$81,07650.2%
Bath remodel, midrange$25,60975.3%
Bath remodel, universal design$41,20361.5%
Primary suite addition, midrange$165,01235%

The pattern is worth noticing: smaller, focused projects return more of their cost than big ones. That does not make the big ones a mistake. It means you should be doing a big project because you will use the space, not because you expect to get the money back. See our guides on whether a kitchen remodel or a bathroom remodel adds value.

The over-build trap

The same report shows what happens at the top end. A major kitchen remodel at the upscale level had a $161,511 job cost and 35.5 percent recouped. An upscale bath remodel had an $80,222 job cost and 41.4 percent recouped. If you plan to sell, the most expensive finishes on the street are the hardest to get back.

That is not an argument against nice finishes. If you will live with them for years, they are worth what they are worth to you. But if resale is part of your reasoning, price a midrange option next to the upscale one and see how different the two numbers are.

What moving costs that a remodel does not

We cannot give verified Florida figures for the costs of selling and buying, so we will not guess at them. What we can say is what belongs on your list: the costs to sell your current home, the costs to buy the next one, the move itself, and the difference between what your home sells for and what a better-fitting home costs. Ask a local real estate agent for the numbers for your street and your price range.

Then compare that whole list with a written remodel estimate. Do not compare a remodel number with a guess about moving, or the other way around. Whichever option you pick should have a real number behind it.

What you cannot buy elsewhere

Some things do not show up in a spreadsheet: a street you know, neighbors, a school you like, a yard you have worked on, a short drive to family. If those matter to you, they are part of the cost of moving, even if no one sends you a bill for them.

The same goes the other way. If you dread the commute or the lot, a perfect kitchen will not change how you feel about living there.

Questions to settle before you decide

  1. Is my list of problems about the house or the place?
  2. Do I plan to stay long enough to use what I build? A larger project makes more sense if you will live with it for years.
  3. How would I pay for it? Hildebrand does not offer financing. Homeowners use their own bank, a HELOC or a refinance. Talk to your lender before you commit.
  4. Is the home safe and sound enough for a remodel? A written estimate after an on-site visit will show what is behind the walls and what needs to be fixed first.

Our guide on how to budget for a remodel walks through the numbers.

A simple way to compare the two

  1. Get a written remodel estimate for the project that would fix your problem.
  2. Ask a local real estate agent what your home would sell for as it is, and what a house that already has what you want costs on your street or in the next one.
  3. List the costs of selling, buying and moving, and ask the agent for numbers instead of guessing.
  4. Put the three side by side. If the remodel is close to the cost of moving, the tie-breaker is usually the things money does not show: the neighbors, the commute, the yard.

We will not say which one wins, because it depends on facts only you have. A free in-home consultation gets you the remodel half of that comparison.

Questions homeowners ask

Is it cheaper to remodel or move?

It depends on your house and your street. Compare a written remodel estimate with the full cost of selling, buying and moving. A local real estate agent can help with the moving side.

Which remodels return the most at resale?

In the 2025 Cost vs Value report for the South Atlantic region, a midrange minor kitchen remodel recouped 109.2 percent, while a midrange primary suite addition recouped 35 percent. These are regional averages.

Does Hildebrand offer financing?

No. Homeowners use their own bank, a HELOC or a refinance.

Should I remodel if I might sell in a few years?

Smaller, focused projects tend to return more of their cost in the regional report. Talk to a local real estate agent about your street.

Can I get an estimate before I decide?

Yes. The in-home consultation and written estimate are free, with no trip fee.
