The short answer

My Safe Florida Home is run by the Florida Department of Financial Services. It offers a free wind mitigation inspection and a grant for hurricane-hardening work. The grant pays $2 for every $1 the homeowner contributes, on a reimbursement basis, up to a $10,000 maximum from the state.

Is it open right now? We cannot tell you. The program's own pages disagree, and we could not confirm its current status as of November 2026. Check the official website, mysafeflhome.com, before you plan around it.

Why we cannot say if it is open

Here is what the official pages say, with no dates on any of them.

  • The homepage advertises free wind mitigation inspections and grants of up to $10,000. It does not say whether the program is open or closed.
  • The FAQ page says the program has paused new inspection applications. It also says grant funding is still available, and it expects grant applications through August, with no year given.
  • A second FAQ page says applications open in phases, starting with low-income applicants aged 60 or older, with specific dates still to be announced.

The program is also subject to annual legislative appropriations, which means the state funds it year by year. Because of all this, treat any claim that the program is open or closed with care, including ours. Use the official website for the latest. We are not listing a phone number here because the program's pages show two different ones.

Who qualifies

The program's FAQ lists these rules.

  • Free inspection: a single-family, site-built, owner-occupied home with a homestead exemption under Florida chapter 196. Condos, co-ops, retirement homes, mobile or manufactured homes, multifamily homes, and second or rental homes are not eligible.
  • Grant: the insured value must be $700,000 or less, and the home must have been built before January 1, 2008, according to the county property appraiser. A grant-application page says the building permit for the original construction must have been applied for before that date.

Pages differ on income. One describes low- and moderate-income Floridians aged 60 and older as a priority group. We found no published income limit.

How the grant works

The state pays $2 for every $1 you contribute. The program's example: on a $15,000 project, the state reimburses $10,000 and you cover $5,000. It is reimbursement, so you generally pay for the work first and get money back. The program also lists a low-income grant of up to $10,000 with no match required.

The order matters. You need the free initial inspection through the program first. Construction should not start before official grant approval. Confirm the order on the official website before you sign a contract.

Planning impact windows around the program

Impact windows and doors are one kind of opening protection. If the program is open when you read this, get the inspection and approval first, then book the work. If it is closed, you can still have your home inspected and ask your insurer about credits. See our guide to the wind mitigation inspection. Our impact windows cost and insurance guide covers the money side.
